Finding Newspapers Online

With the popularity of the Internet, most newspapers now maintain some sort of presence online. Some newspaper web sites only have information on how to subscribe, others have news stories, vital records (births, deaths, marriages) information as well as a variety of local news.

There are several good newspaper index sites you can visit; here are my favorites:

All three sites list newspaper web sites for several countries.

Once you locate a newspaper you are interested in, you can visit the site to see if they have any items of interest (obituary archives, local news, etc.), or e-mail for information on where the newspaper archive is kept, whether it can be searched, if the newspaper is microfilmed, if the local library or genealogical society has extracted information, whether they accept Letters to the Editor via e-mail, and so on.
