Cemetery Transcriptions Available Online
The USGenWeb project is sponsoring a wonderful project
to transcribe information from headstones across the country. If you
live near a cemetery which has not yet been documented by USGenWeb,
think about volunteering. You can find information about the Tombstone
Transcription Project page at their Web site. Transcribed cemetery
information is already being placed on the Web! To find out which states
have information online, pop over to the Cemetery
Registry and pick the state you're interested in. An excellent example
of the online project can be seen at the Wicomico
County Cemetery Project page.
A Web page with excellent advice on maintaining grave
sites and making transcriptions is the Cemetery
Dos and Don'ts. The Cemetery
Interment Lists on Internet site has a directory of all the sites
online which have cemetery transcriptions, and includes links to cemetery
transcription sites for other countries.
British and Canadian Cemetery Records Online
The Ontario
Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA) has a database of over 1.1 million interments
in Ontario. This is an exceptional project, and I highly recommend a
visit if you have Canadian ancestry. You can also download the OCFA
files to your own computer, but an easier way to own OCFA is to purchase
the database on CD from GenRef.
The British
Columbia Cemetery Finding Aid is a database "of the surnames, cemetery
name and location of more than 100,000 entries collected from records
and headstone inscriptions associated with 141 cemeteries situated in
the province of British Columbia, Canada and one from the state of Washington,
USA." You can search the files online, or download the datafiles to
your own computer.
Researchers of British descent will want to visit the
Monumental Inscriptions
page for information about their services and the project.
