Kind of a different site, the Find A Grave site allows you to search for famous people's graves by geographic location or by name.

The Olive Tree Genealogy page has a section titled Graven Images, which describes items found on gravestones, and Grave Symbols.

If you have the funds, don't neglect the subscription online data libraries such as Genealogy Library, which may contain digitized or transcribed local histories. Many such resources mention cemeteries which may no longer be active, or provide information about how and when a cemetery was started.
