One of the best advantages of using the Internet for your family history is that you can get instant access to genealogical data from any computer that has a connection. Sites like Virtual Cemetery and the 1900 Census can give you images of gravestones and census microfilm that have information about your ancestors. The World Family Tree Online goes one step further by allowing you to download entire branches of your family tree.

The World Family Tree is a collection of electronic pedigree charts, which show the relationships between family members. They have been contributed by thousands of family historians like you and hundreds of thousands of family trees are included in the complete collection. Many of the trees also contain additional notes and data about the people in them, and can be a valuable resource in filling in the blanks of your family's history.

The World Family Tree is available on a series of CD-ROMs, or via online subscription on a monthly or annual basis, which is the topic of this lesson. Since the World Family Tree is so large, the easiest way to determine whether one of your ancestors is included is to do a search. We'll do that next.
