Grow your family tree with this data:
Pinpoint a family's location at a particular time. When you know where a family lived, you know where to look for other important records, such as county records of births, marriages, and deaths. Also, with the information from the census index, you can find a copy of the original census record. Depending on the census year, you may learn more important family information, such as the names, ages, and birthplaces of the other individuals in the household.

What does this product give you?
This data set contains indexes to approximately 500,000 census records from five counties that comprised New York City in 1870. These counties are Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, and Suffolk. Records indexed may not be comprehensive for the time and region covered.

You can discover the following about an ancestor:
Full name
County of residence at the time of the census, as well as a more specific location, such as the town or district (see our list of counties)
National Archives microfilm series, roll, and page numbers so you can find copies of the original census schedules

Census records usually include entries for heads of household and sometimes for:
Individuals with a surname different from the head of household
Females age 70 or older
Males age 50 or older
Individuals living in orphanages

Looking at the original census schedule will further help you determine if you have found information about your ancestor or just someone with the same name. If you discover that the individual is your ancestor, then you can add information from the census schedule to your family tree

What are the data sources for this product?
