This data set indexes approximately 2,062,000 census records gathered from various U.S. counties in 1830. The District of Columbia and the following 32 states are represented:

Alabama Minnesota
Arkansas Mississippi
Arizona Missouri
California North Carolina
Delaware New Hampshire
Florida New Jersey
Georgia New York
Illinois Ohio
Indiana Pennsylvania
Iowa Rhode Island
Kentucky South Carolina
Louisiana Tennessee
Massachusetts Texas
Maryland Virginia
Maine Vermont
Michigan Wisconsin

Please note that the state names listed here refer to current U.S. state lines, rather than the territory demarcations that may have existed when the record was taken. By presenting the data in this way, we intended to remove a major obstacle for modern researchers who may not necessarily know where territory boundaries were drawn during each particular era of American history. For example, you may know that your ancestors originated in present-day Alabama, but you may not know that, in 1790, Alabama was part of the Spanish province of West Florida.

If you find your ancestor's name, our U.S. Census Subscription can provide you with a copy of the census schedule page containing their record. Looking at the original census schedule will further help you determine if you have found information about your ancestor or just someone with the same name. If you discover that the individual is your ancestor, then you can add information from the census schedule to your family tree.

Also, not every county in every state is included in this data set. For a complete breakdown of the counties covered and the the number of individuals recorded in each county, click here.
