Carroll
O'Connor (1924-2001)
 |
| Carroll O'Connor was born August 2, 1924 in The Bronx, New York.
The eldest son of a prominent Irish-Catholic family, he later attended
the University of Montana (where he met his future wife Nancy Fields).
The outbreak of World War II interrupted his college career and
inspired his brief stint as a merchant seaman. His travels subsequently
led him to Ireland where he enrolled as a theater student at Dublin's
University College. Following a successful career in film and on
Broadway, O'Connor landed the plum, if controversial, role of Archie
Bunker on the CBS series "All in the Family." But in contrast
to his character's conservative leanings, O'Connor spent much of
his professional life promoting socially progressive issues. In
1991 he received the NAACP's Image Award for producing the racially
conscious television drama "In the Heat of the Night."
After the drug-related suicide of his only son Hugh, O'Connor became
an instrumental force behind California's Drug Dealers Civil Liability
law. O'Connor died June 21, 2001 due to complications from diabetes.
