Ancestry
of Colonel Harland Sanders
 |
|
Harland Sanders
was born in Henryville, Indiana in 1890. He left school after
the sixth grade and spent most of his first 65 years bouncing
from job to job. By the time he collected his first social security
check, he had yet to strike it big. That all changed when his
family moved to Kentucky to run a gas station. There, his home
cooking in the 6-seat dining room was his first success until
he was forced out of business by a new highway. Left with nothing
but his secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, Sanders hit the road
franchising his recipe for Kentucky fried chicken. In the first
two years he sold five franchises but within 10 years, he had
more than 600 outlets. Sanders sold the company in 1964 but remained
its spokesman. He earned the honorary title of Colonel from the
Governor of Kentucky in recognition of his contribution to the
state's cuisine. Sanders died of leukemia in 1980 at the age of
90.
