Christina
Onassis (1950-1988)
 |
| Christina Onassis was born December 11, 1950 in New
York City. As the only daughter of millionaire shipping magnate
Aristotle Onassis, she enjoyed a privileged upbringing in the boarding
schools of New York and Switzerland. Christina’s first exposure to the
press came in 1960 when her mother, socialite Athina Mary Livanos,
split from her father in a very public divorce. After her father’s
second marriage in 1968, Christina found herself a tabloid favorite
once again - this time as the stepdaughter of former first lady
Jacqueline Kennedy. Aristotle Onassis died seven years later, leaving
Christina in control of his shipping business which she successfully
managed for the next decade. But in spite of her flair for business,
Christina was better known for a life of hard living - summed up in
four failed marriages, struggles with her weight and drug addiction.
She died from a heart attack in 1988. Her only child Athina (daughter
of fourth husband Thierry Roussel) inherited the remnants of the
Onassis estate on January 29, 2003. |
