4. Washington³ Duke (Taylor⁴, John Taylor⁵, John Taylor⁶, Henry⁷, Henry⁸, Thomas⁹) was born in North Carolina 18 Dec 1820.⁽⁴⁾ Washington died 8 May 1905 in North Carolina, at 84 years of age.

He married twice. He married Mary Caroline Clinton 9 Aug 1842. Mary died Nov 1847. He married Artelia Roney 9 Dec 1852. Artelia was born 1829. Artelia was the daughter of John Roney and Mary Trolinger. Artelia died 2 Aug 1858 in Haw River, Alamance, North Carolina, at 29 years of age.⁽⁵⁾

Washington Duke and Mary Caroline Clinton had the following children:

5 i. Sidney Taylor² Duke was born in North Carolina 1844.⁽⁶⁾ Sidney died 1858 at 14 years of age.⁽⁷⁾

6 ii. Doctor Brodie Leonidas Duke was born in North Carolina ca 1846.⁽⁸⁾ Doctor died 1919 at 73 years of age.⁽⁹⁾

Washington Duke and Artelia Roney had the following children:

7 iii. Mary Elizabeth Duke was born in Durham, Durham, North Carolina 1853. Mary died 1893 in Durham, Durham, North Carolina, at 40 years of age. She married Robert E. Lyon.

8 iv. Benjamin Newton Duke was born in North Carolina 27 Apr 1855. Benjamin died 8 Jan 1929 in New York City, New York, New York, at 73 years of age. He married Sarah Pierson Angier in Durham, Durham, North Carolina, 21 Feb 1877.⁽¹⁰⁾ Sarah was born 1856. Sarah died 2 Sep 1936 at 80 years of age.
