Flora
MacDonald was imprisoned in the Tower of London for
helping Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince
Charlie, escape to France after the defeat of the
Jacobites in 1746. To make his escape, Charles disguised
himself as "Betty Burke," an Irish maidservant.
When they parted ways, the Prince gave Flora a locket
with his portrait, saying "I hope, madam, that we
may meet in St. James's yet," but she never saw him
again. Their romantic adventure was commemorated in
Highland ballad and legend.
