Grace Kelly was born November 12, 1929 in Philadelphia to Jack, an Irish-American who made millions in the construction industry, and Margaret Kelly, a former athlete and model. Her beauty and grace helped her become a Hollywood sensation and she appeared in such memorable films as High Noon, Dial M for Murder, and Rear Window. In 1954, she won a Best Actress Oscar and later that year she met Prince Rainier Grimaldi of Monaco at the Cannes Festival. When they married in April 1956, the Princess of Hollywood became Princess of Monaco. Kelly put her acting career aside to become involved in official palace duties. She succeeded her husband as president of the American Red Cross and established several charities. In September, 1982, Kelly died after a stroke caused her to lose control of the car she was driving. All of Monaco and the Grimaldi family mourned the loss and Rainier never remarried. |
