Born into a theatrical family, Grace Allen left school at 14 to sing and dance on tour with her father and sisters. She teamed up with George Burns in 1922 after mistaking him for his partner (William Lorraine) and proposing that they form a comedy team. This accidental duo proved to be a success both onstage and off and they were married in 1926. Their intimate style of comedy evolved from vaudeville to radio, television, and movies. When they played themselves on their radio program, they marked a milestone in the development of the domestic situation comedy. Allen's ability to portray likable, slightly loopy characters made her one of America's most popular entertainers for more than 30 years. |
