Humphrey DeForest
Bogart was born December 25, 1899 in New York to Deforest Bogart,
a distinguished surgeon, and Maud Humphrey, an illustrator. Early
on, Bogart was encouraged by his father to go into medicine but,
after he was expelled from Phillips Academy for disciplinary problems,
he joined the Navy instead. During World War I, Bogart was injured
and left with scars and a partially paralyzed upper lip; this
gave him his famous look and way of speaking. Bogart's career
began on stage in the 1920s and by 1930 he had made debut onscreen
. His career spanned more than 25 years and 60 films. In 1944,
he starred in To Have and Have Not, with 19-year-old Lauren
Bacall. The two were married, starred in three more films together,
and had two children.
