| This one-time
"Public Enemy Number One" was a bank robber and gangster
who refused to give up without a fight. After learning the tricks
of the trade from his cellmates at an Indiana prison, John Dillinger
formed a gang and began robbing banks in the early 1930s. Captured
in 1934, Dillinger escaped from prison but was almost captured again
in a police ambush a few days later. After escaping the ambush,
he underwent plastic surgery to alter his face and his fingerprints
before returning to public life. Later that year, he died in a gun
battle with police after an acquaintance helped police arrange for
his capture in front of a Chicago movie theater. |
