Born March 1, 1954, Ron Howard made his theatrical debut when he was two and appeared onscreen for the first time when at the age of five. A very popular child star, Howard grew up playing Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show. Despite his fame, Howard's parents enrolled him in public school whenever possible to give him a sense of normalcy. As a young adult, Howard played Ritchie Cunningham on the wildly successful series Happy Days before turning his attention to directing. He studied cinema at the University of Southern California and went on to direct a number of popular films (among them, Splash, Cocoon, Backdraft, and EdTV). In 2001, Howard won an Academy Award for directing A Beautiful Mind. |
