In a letter written about 1950 by my husband's great grandmother, on the Native American heritage of her grandmother, Susan Ellen SCOTT, she writes (misspellings and punctuation copied from original):
"...By foreparent Susan Ellen Page then adopeded to get possesion of her heratage to Scot of Main New Hampshire being her birthplace & inheratage by one Iriquah Injun girl Wife of Page who died at early age of child 2 year She was given to pages Mother her G Mother...She married Jacob Horne a navy man in early days he was Scotch man..."
In another letter dated 9 Sep 1960, Maud wrote:
"...Gpa name was Jacob Horne was near 20 years older than his wife Susen E Page a baby Born to the tribe of Iraqua Injun in Vermont her father was killed.I know not how but his name was Scot but a family adopted her by name Page She was Inroled I can not tell number or but her Head Rite was in Vermont Gpa & Gma sold there after 3 or 4 children but 4 I think was 4 and in 3 years came to Topeka Kansas..."
Additional family oral histories include that Susan's parents' tribe was on the move. Her mother stopped by the side of the trail to give birth and died. She was found there, they determined her mother was Iroquois by her dress.Susan's date of birth is listed as 5 May 1824.
This is the biggest brick wall of all and any assistance would be appreciated.I keep plugging away at this but apparently haven't a clue where to find the information I seek.Thank you in advance.
