Re: York Island identity in 1776
Long Island was known as "Long Island" long before 1776 and I can give you many examples for 1778.There wouldn't have been a reason for a name change 1776-1778.

There are and have been other places, such as in ME and NH known as "York Island."A great website for place-names, including many historical and obsolete ones is here:
This is not to say that someone ~not~ familiar with NY place names might not have said something like "N'york Island" and a person transcribing their words could have written it as "York Island."
But New York was never known as "York."
