I'm trying to find more information about the Revolutionary War service of an ancestor named Levi Prince (originally Printz). He was born ca. 1755 in Germany and died in 1830 in Loudoun County, Virginia. His obituary says he was a captain and that he served in the war of the Revolution:
Regarding Levi Prince, the application says the following:
"In Addition to the services above mentioned I hired Levi Prince as a substitute for 10 months and paid him about 250 dollars & a good suit of cloathes. I delivered said substitute to Col Barber [sic: Ambrose Barbour] and he received him in the year 1778."
"History of Braxton County and Central West Virginia" by John Davison Sutton 1919 says that "Captain Prince was in the artillery arm of the service and became deaf by the concussion of the guns in battle."
