Hello - I'm doing research on the Bruton family that lived in the colonial and early national period in eastern North Carolina.
In reading Hugh Rankin's book, "North Carolina in the American Revolution," it says that the British required that all inhabitants in the area where my Brutons lived had to go to Wilmington to take an oath of allegiance to the King.On 1 August 1781 the British marched out of Wilmington on an expedition to punish all those who had not complied.
That means that they had a list.
I searched the NC State Archives and the British National Archives on-line but I couldn't find any records relating to any such records.
Does anyone know if these records exist?Or who could help me find them in Raleigh or London?
