BOOK WRITEN BY WAKEFIELD ON BLACK HAWK WAR

John Allen Wakefield served in the Illinois militia during the Black Hawk War and was likely present at both the battles of Wisconsin Heights and the Mississippi (Bad Axe.) He wrote a book shortly after the end of the war. Wakefield's monograph remained the only published settler/militia account of the war for decades.
After the turn of the century, Illinois BHW researcher Frank Stevens reprinted the work with annotation and some footnotes. A second reprinting was done circa 1976, and some copies from this run surface from time to time. A recent check on both bibliofind.com and abooksearch.com revealed no volumes currently for sale. You may try to access a print copy through interlibrary loan.
Wakefield's reminiscences remains one of the better and more quoted of the writings from the conflict.
Good luck with your search.
