Dear Robert, Priests, even ones in religious orders like Jesuits and Franciscans and Carmelites, had to fill out the census. The census would be a good place to look for Tom Casey whether he was a priest or not.
Words like Romish priest were used extensively in the late 1800s.During the Know Nothing era (maybe 1850s) Catholic churches were burned and priests lynched. This country has a very extensive history of anti Catholicism going back to its beginnings, when Catholics weren't allowed to settle in most colonies. Maryland was founded to have a colony for Catholics. The anti Catholicism let up after John F. Kennedy became president, but continues even now.Historians consistently misrepresent Catholic events in history, and no one corrects them. When I write to the FCC about incorrect facts on tv shows, I receive letters saying it is a matter of editorial opinion, when it is actually a matter of existing documents that can be checked and verified.Public television showed a long program on the life of Martin Luther edited and produced entirely by Lutheran organizations. There was no effort to present the facts that supported Catholic teachings about him.I think people have been hearing anti Catholic attitudes and values unchallenged for so long that they no longer know there is another side. They assume that what they have been told is correct. Sincerely, Kate
