Tatoos used by soldiers in Civil War
I am researching a man who died in Pennsylvania in 1891 who , according to a newspaper article, was supposed to have had his name tatooed on his arm.By 1891 the tatoo was no longer legible but it supposedly was "Grosch F. Weber" - the F standing for Fredrich. He had been going by the name Groschweber or Fred Weaver from Bavaria, born 1844.The only reason I have been able to think of, to have your own name tatooed on your arm, was if you were in armed conflict.I have checked with an e-mail contact in Germany and he felt that this was not common practice in Germany during that time period.
Is this story plausible? Is the tatoo an indication that this man could have served in the Civil War in the United States?Where would you start to research this?
Thank you for any insights.
