Thanks for your offer to help
John Kamp enrolled in Co D, 4th Regiment Mississippi Infantry according to the book, Lafayette County Confederate Veterans, Vol I.
There is a record for John Kamp enrolled in this company and regiment. The record cover jacket says refer to John Kemp 2 Calvary (which would be Mississippi.)
John Kamp in Lafayette Co MS is John Kemp on the 1860 Lafayette Co MS census and the 1857 - 1861 Property Tax Records there, so I do know that not being able to read or write he was referred to in Lafayette Co both ways - Kamp and Kemp.
There is a record for John Kemp Co D, 4th Regiment Mississippi Calvary, with a printed note that this company became Company D, 2 Regiment Mississippi Calvary.
All of these state the soldier was captured near Jackson MS (one said Caton, which I suppose is Canton, near Jackson MS) July 1863 and was paroled Sep 1864, with clothing being issued in Oct 1864.
The only thing puzzling to me was the three enrollment places. Both Senatobia and Holly Springs are in nearby counties, but not Jackson MS
Thanks for any thoughts on what records are for the John Kamp who was from Lafayette Co MS
