I am trying to find information about any NC Soldiers who were shot for desertion during the Civil War.
When I was a little boy, and with red hair, my Grandmother, Lillie Morrison Allen, told me a story about a family member that also had red hair, who was in the Civil War. She told me he was the only redheaded member of her family. I don't ever remember her telling me his name, but he would have been a Confederate Soldier.I can only assume that he was either an Allen or Morrison from Cleveland County. He supposedly came down with Smallpox, and deserted the service. He was trying to make it back home to Cleveland County, or Shelby, NC, where he was from, but was captured while trying to get home, and shot for Desertion.
I just learned of this Forum, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if such records exist for Deserters or anyone I should request this information from.If the story is true I would like o find any records about his death, burial, family members and such.
