Civil war pension index shows Joseph E Higgins received an invalid's pension October 7, 1863 (application # 34005 & Certificate # 230339) His widow Susan received her widow's pension July 27, 1917 (Application # 1104890 & Certificate # 848573) She applied in Massachusetts. His service was in Company "A" 16th Maine Infantry & Company "I" 24th Maine Infantry.
This soldier appears on 1890; Census Place: Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts; Roll: 14; Page: 6; Enumeration District: 1096.
Notes his service in both regimenta as a private in 24th Maine, it notes he was shot in foot. He re-enlisted in 16th Maine, attained rank of sergeant. It notes he was shot in thigh.
