One of my ancestors who died in the war was William W. HURST, living in Pike County, AL when he enlisted in Co. G Perote Guards.
This became Co. D, 1st Ala Volunteers CSA, where he is shown as a Pvt, age 23, with an enlistment date of 1861/04/01.Authority, Original roll, 1st Corporal, S. R. Wheeler, assisting historian. [Found at the Archives of History, Montgomery, AL]
He and Hiram HURST (who was likely his brother, but I have no proof) were both wounded in the fighting at Island 10 and Port Hudson.Hiram HURST was captured and died.
William W HURST was taken to the CSA Hospital established at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL, where he died in 1863 from his injuries sustained at Island 10 & Port Hudson.
There are no names on the few markers at the Confederate Rest Cemetery located near the present day Grand Hotel.I suspect these markers to be memorials, rather than actually identifying all of the graves, there are far too few to be representing all the fatalities who died at this hospital.More likely, there are many unmarked confederate graves lying under what is now the Golf Course for the present day Grand Hotel.
But is anyone familiar with this confederate hospital who may have found more information?I read somewhere that there had been records, but that they did not survive the reconstruction of the Grand as a Hotel.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to pinpoint further information on my ancestor.
My research many years ago at the Archives of History in Montgomery turned up some (index card size)notes written by CCC workers copying from original 1st Ala Inf Regt documents - but when I was there, no one seemed to know where the originals were. There were cards with some conflicting data noted, listed with Lt. Goodlet and Corp. Wheeler as "historians" but the staff at the time had no answers to any of my questions about the conflicting information or about how I could find the source information.
I hope that someone reading this will have more experience in hunting CSA information or will have suggestions on sources or resources. I really need help; I don't know how to step forward from here.
