Checking the 1890 vet census was a good idea but as noted a lot of men were missed.
I think Ancestry.Com has enough to i.d. him or his widow if either applied for pension benefits.
By 1905 Civil War vets got a lot of attention. Check fora obit-which may be in the body of a newspaper or a formal obit more common today.
There is an outside chance of finding him in the roll of a local GAR post but GAR records are often hard to find. There even might be a GAR marker on his grave.
