Daniel Hilton filed this report with the Daily Union and American, December 20, 1865. Daniel Claimed to have 22 sons, sixteen that served in the Federal Army, one in the Rebel army and five that were too young to do any fighting on their own hook. Daniel lived in Roane Co. TN and also gave two more of this type of interviews, always stating the same high numbers.Daniel was a Cherokee who left a family in McMinnville TN for Oklahoma in the Spring of 1829.By 1836 he was back in Valley River NC.I can verify part of his story as we have uncovered the younger sons Civil war records. Two fought for the South.Solomon Helton was a wagoner and body guard, and Ransom Helton, fought for the South, Jefferson, Daniel, Silas Marion Helton, James Harvey Helton, William Henry Helton and Jason Albert Helton fought for the Union. The name changed from Hilton to Helton for our family during this time.
These are all the sons and two daughters (Sarah and Caroline) from the last marriage. He may have had three or more marriages. All I can find are those listed above.I cannot find the others or even know if they went by the Helton name.It is possible being Cherokee they were named after Daniel's first wife.I figure the Civil War Records are the only chance other than DNA to find the rest of our Family. They would match our Native American DNA.
Any Help greatly appreciated. Michael Helton NA descendant, Cherokee First Family
