Margaret, I have seen your message re Sgt William Bentley (Later Troop Sergeant Major) 11th Hussars. My father Clarence Bentley joined the Hussars last century - we think there was a previous family connection. He used to smile about "the Death or Glory Boys". Sadly he died when I was 11 so I never had an adult conversation with him. He was brought up in the West Riding, near Leeds, so not miles apart. My father's father was called John William Bentley, and he passed the name to his eldest son, father's eldest brother, known as John Willie. John William snr's father was called John. Knowing how these things often went, John's father could well have been William. That, the Yorkshire base and the Hussar connection suggests that William Bentley might have been an ancestor. Do you have any info on William Bentley's family? When he died he had two sons, neither being John. Crider mentions sons George and Arthur named in the will, and a son Alfred living with him in 1881 (census). Each has one name. There could have been a John (born in 185x?) who had a son John William in 1875, who would not therefore have been at home in the 1881 census and could have died before his father (d. 1888). John is certainly stated to have been "deceased" when John William married Sarah Jane Haley in 1898. May I ask where you are based? At a guess somewhere in Yorks. Hope you find this interesting and can throw some light on my questions.
