PUGH DILEMMA
Jim Pugh's 37-marker DNA was an exact match to me. On paper he is my 7th cousin once removed. Our most recent common ancestor was 8 generations ago. Geographically
intermingling of our families does not make sense.
All descendants of my 3rd great grandfather had a minus mutation at marker 458 that the haplotype of the immigrant Pugh family did not have. Jim had this mutation also. And descendants of the brothers of my 3rd great grandfather did not have this mutation.
It was suggested testing other members of his family. His 1st cousin, Howard (their fathers were brothers), tested 2 genetic distances from Jim and me. Differences were on markers 458 and CDYb. So it appears Jim is closer related to me than to his 1st cousin. How can this be?
