Swam to shore! That is funny! But likely not true.We are too quick to accept these fanciful stories and old tales about name changes (which did not happen).
Yes the Family Search web page is very good... and this is due to untold hours for volunteers transcribing info.
1) Often times the transcribing is an issue with names, hard to read, transcribed incorrectly
2) Sometimes given names and surnames are switched by transcribers or on the original manifest. For instance if one searches for Katarzyna as a surname... you will find several... an in most if not all cases they are actually given names.
3) Damaged manifests... sometimes manifests are torn, with names or partial names missing... just search for a given name and you will find numerous cases of missing surnames on manifests due to damage. Or the names are obliterated by smudges, etc.
4) Sharing of passports... this occurred more often than we can imagine.Reason? Who knows! passports until the early 1920s had no photographs and cost money.Perhaps someone sent their passport back home for another to use... or someone applied and could not use the passport and someone else did... or perhaps there was some legal reason..
I have found ship manifests for people who have searched for years...
