I cannot begin to summarize the miserable time I have had with FTM 2012.I was so looking forward to the "ease" HA!with which I could synchronize, etc. One of mymain problems is when I merged several trees (necessary b/c I had to use GED.com to go to Ancestry b/c I had FTM 2009), the media went along, butthe tree was totally jumbled.I had a bunch of obscure sibs coming up 12 times, and my line was tangled with my husband's.I would be in 18th c Scotland and it would show parents as 8th c Vikings! I have about 12,000 people and about 25000 media.
I have a new computer with Windows 7 and Microsoft Home and Student. Yes, I have plenty of room on the hard drive, etc. Yes, I have compacted over and over again.
I was merging my previous trees while on the phone with FTM guiding me. I have spent days trying to find the duplicates created by the merges and reattaching lost media and am totally confusedI also had a lot of sources connected and know many of them are in cyberspace.FTM still will not allow me to link my current tree to Ancestry and when Itried to load it without linking, it took forever , but that didn't work either. I bought 2012 to finally merge and link all my information, butinstead it has created chaos I can not sort.I have linked several trees previously, but when I would try to sync new material, the whole sync would fail.
I have had endless problems of every kind imaginable. I will try to fix a relationship by merging a GGF with the same person but listed as a distant cousin, and, yes, I begin with the GGF, but it will make it the cousin and mess up sometimes 15 generations with it.I have also tried detaching and reattaching a person with a problem with the line, even deleting the problem person, adding it fresh from Ancestry and then reattaching, but no luck.I have tried exporting sections of the tree where the line is jumbled andthen merging that with my current tree I am working from (one where the line is pretty good, but I began with 6 pictures), and that has helped meretrieve, but sometimes then the entire line will end where the export stopped which I tried not to make TOO big b/c of the problems with the line.I have been sent about 20 suggestion emails from FTM which I have tried, but nothing really fixes it. The link would still show on Anc but not at FTM, and I was always told to unlink them and start over. One of my problems is when I go back so far, I end up coming to the same person multiple times, am not alerted that he/she is a duplicate, and then have to find and merge later which I have spent DAYS doing one at a time, hoping to un-jumble the mess.. The old names have titles and so many spellings, etc, that it gets very confusing.
FTM fails every time I try to "find duplicate people."
I have so many copies of my tree, afraid to delete anything, but at critical times, the back up copies, of course, failed.
It is so easy for FTM to cheerily say there are a few glitches, but the damage done to my trees has been profound, and I have spent enough hours trying to fix it to qualify me for institutionalization.I am recently retired and relocated, so this was supposed to be a pleasant diversion and instead has become a nightmare.I suggest that Ancestry might at least offer compensation for the WEEKS I have spent by a lengthy subscription to Ancestry.
