Townships are one of the land division units in the federal township and range system.Counties are subdivided into ranges, townships, and sections, and are described by their distance from a specific measuring point, such as a meridian.
In the early 19th century, most, if not all, of the country was surveyed to establish standard measurements.Every state I've ever lived in (eight, all over the country) has had townships.
In many states, the only time you see a reference to the township is when you pay your tax bill or sell your property. In others, the township defines the area for the local governments, rather than individual towns within the township.
