Andrea: Well, that sure is interesting. So the DC I happened to have found wasn't some fluke? I know that many soldiers were buried where they were killed and later exhumed and the remains returned to their families for burial at home. I don't know if the families had to request the return or whether it was done automatically. The reason you give is likely spot on - we just couldn't spare the resources during a time of war. In the back of my mind I recall that the government or military has something like a "graves commission" or some such name. Its mission is to return remains of KIAs to their families. I think they are still finding remains in Vietnam. I agree but can't prove that this dc procedure was likely done in other states - these families who lost loved ones got a lot of respect and I can't envision any state throwing a bunch of roadblocks in the way of their burying their kin.
