Andrea: Thanks for that link - it explains a lot. This has been a learning experience and I'm keeping copies of these posts to pass on to the fellow who posed the question to me. I'd like to see an "SF102R". I guess I never fully appreciated the sensitivities involved. A buddy of mine is a big collector of WWII militaria and he told me about a real touchy situation now going on. It seems as though some Russian "entrepreneurs" are digging up mass graves of German soldiers. They are looking for helmets, bayonets, belt bukles, etc. They clean them up and ship them over here for sale at militaria and gun shows. The German government is absolutely livid about these grave robbers. And rightly so - many dealers won't have anything to do with this trade and want the fellows dealing in it to be banned from the shows.
Also, you jogged my memory because a couple of years ago I located the dc for my grand-uncle who died 1952 in Ohio. Along with the dc was a form titled: "Information Concerning the Burial of Deceased Veterans". His form is only partially filled out with his name, dob, dod,d/burial, war (in his case, WWI), cemetery, sec., lot, grave. Across the form is stamped: "Information not available due to lost discharge papers". The lost information referred to is:
Honorably Discharged? Date?
Rank or grade at discharge?
Service? (Branch)
Organization (Regt., Battalion, Fleet, Squadron, etc)
Unit in Organization (Company, Battery, Ship, etc)
Branch of service (as Infantry, Coast Artillery, Airborne Enginers, etc.)
The form doesn't identify who printed it. There is no form number that I can find. I don't really know the purpose of the form or why the info was being collected. Any ideas?Rick
