Hi Cathy, You will see from the forum that I have recently experienced the same problem as you. Although well-meaning, I doubt whether the responses you received would have been any help; for example, I cannot see how it would be possible to create a Gedcom file if that particular family file cannot be opened. For my own part, I have re-installed ver. 8.5a to see if that would make any difference. Unfortunately, it didn't so I then installed an earlier version of the program but, once again this made no difference. I have no difficulty at all in opening other much smaller family files whichever version I use. My main file contains over 40,000 people, and I suspect that there is probably a very small piece of corrupt data in it affecting one person only and that this is having an adverse effect on the program causing the Index to hang when, during the process of compilation, it reaches that person's data. I would be very interested to know if you have had any success in compiling your Index and opening your tree and, if so, how you managed to do this. It is a pity that Generations is no longer supported. I have been using it since it's Reunion days and, apart from glitches that arise now and again, like it very much. However, if I can retrieve my file, I think I would seriously consider going over to another program such as Legacy. As to retrieving data, I am wondering if there is a program out there, other than Gen, that can read UDS files? Regards.
