To the "topic at hand". The Search Engine.
1) One suggestion would be for you to make your detailed needs known on the Enhancement Request Webstie. You can get there by going to the Online Help Center [ http://www.genealogy.com/helphttp://www.genealogy.com/help ] that has a link at the Top of the Message Listing, or by going here:
2) Perhaps there is more than one way to use the Search EngineS that are available to us. I don't know how others use the search engines, but I dont just put in a name in hopes of finding MY Ancestor(s). Now, I use the Family Tree Maker program. It has a wonderful Online Family Finder Report (OFFR). I will run an OFFR on a Descendant list of a couple of generations. NOT my entire file. I will review that OFFR. I only look at 4 or 5 star "hits" and only those "hits" with a number of "other" people in my file that may be in that "hit". I look at the names of those "other" people to see if I can relate that list to the person who is at the top of that list. Example: there will be a Plus Sign, a Name, and the number of other people on that hit. I don't bother looking at the 1 or 2 other people. Its probably not one of mine. From what I have seen, the OFFR takes into account Relationships and Dates, and probably in that order. It may not take into account locations. But the number of other "hits" is the key for me.
This will tell me where to look. Some Online, Some on CDs. Since Genealogy.Com has expanded what they offer with their subscriptions, I don't by many CDs.
With that "hit", a hit being an online source, I'll go to that source and do a surname search on that Book, Census, or WFT Tree. I don't bother putting anything other than the Surname, because the "hit" list will tell me who I might find on that source. So, generally, I'll have a number of different people to be looking for. Usually with the same surname.
Why? I may have the First Name that was recorded differently then what the Book / source has that first name recorded. Usually there is more information on the hit from searching that source that gives me a hint as to let me know I don't need to spend more time looking at that specific item or that I do need to look at that Census page for example.
All I am saying is that I do NOT rely on one search engine to find MY Ancestors. I try to use the Tools that are available to me to narrow down my research.
I must also say that Genealogy.com and Family Tree Maker have improved their Search Engines over time. I have found the Good Hits far out weigh the Bad ones from a couple of years ago.
Also, I still suggest that you go to the Enhancement Request website and make your needs known.
