I just received an old diary from 1886.The author is an 18 year old, middle class man living in Philadelphia, PA.
Two of his entries are quite puzzling to me as well as everyone I have asked around here and I am wondering what he means by this phrase:
"Mashed 3 Little Fairies"
One time it is noted on January 3, 1886 and the second on January 10, 1886 and notes a church he was at apparently when this occured.
All other notations in the diary refer to his studies, work as a clerk, young ladies visiting his home (which I thought odd for the time period)and his visits to different churches (he spent a lot of time in church on Sundays).
Any idea what the young man was referring to?I'm thinking that the changes in colloquial terms between then and now may have this particular phrase having a different meaning than what a few people have suggested (of course, they are not thinking in lingo from over 100 years ago!)
