Most of the buildings and possessions of the Colonial settlers living in the area comprising the present Towns of Sudbury and Maynard were destroyed on 21 April 1676.
However, the lives of those settlers who had taken refuge in the several fortified Garrison Houses in that area were spared by the abrupt and surprising departure of the hostile Native American warriors late in the day.
