Hello! I am looking for someone who served with my cousin, Cpl Eugene "Gene" Short, in the Korean War. A while back I sent off for his military records from the Nat'l. Archives but sadly, like many others, his were lost in the fire they had in 1973. All they were able to send me was a single sheet of paper that didn't have too much information on it. We would love to hear from someone who might have served with Gene & be able to tell us a little bit about his military career. Or even share any memories they have of him. Also, need a little bit of help in trying to figure out some military abbreviations? :-)
Here's what I do have on Gene: Date if Birth: 17 Jul 1930 Arkansas ((Died: 29 Feb 1972)) Dates of Service: 28 May 1948 to 22 Apr 1952 Rank: Corporal Assignments & Geographical Location: H-S Co. 13th Med TK BN 1st A.D. 8239 SV DET HQ SV Group Hq Hq Co Div Trains
I think "H-S Co. 13th Med TK BN 1st A.D." means ....13th Med TK BN 1st A.D. is his unit, which was the 13th Medium Tank Battalion, 1st Armored Division, right? Does that mean he drove a tank? ....not sure what "H-S Co." is though?
Then I Googled the "8239 SV DET HQ SV Group" but couldn't find anything that tells me what that is.....any clues there?
Nor do I know what "Hq Hq Co Div Trains" means.
Oh & I have an old newspaper article telling about how Gene was in the GHQ Raiders. Here are a few snippets from the article:
Title: Helena PFC Member of Toughest Unit in Korea Subtitle: With X Corps in Korea ""The Raiders, attached to General Almond's X Corps, are volunteers, most of whom were serving with General MacArthur's Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan when the Korean War broke out.....
.....He joined the Raiders in August, 1950, after serving with the 8230th Service Retachment of General Headquarters, Far East Command, in Tokyo.""
Would love to find someone who served with Gene in the Raiders.
Thanks ahead of time, sure would appreciate any help any of you might be able to give me.
