Okay, there's a flag for me- Here's what it is for me-
I have this as my family tree-
+Sir Stephen Fox- England???? (this person is questionable, it has been written in notes, but I have never found any evidence stating that he is the right person. The notes I have say that because he was royal, Vaniah didn't want to be known as someone important when he moved to the colonies in America. It is a possible that he changed his name to Vaniah so that he would be "hard" to find.)
his son-
+Vaniah Fox b-1725 England, d-1819 Long Island, NY
married- March 23, 1748 Glastonbury, Connecticut
to- Abigail Cadwell (They did have a son named Vaniah, who is listed in the DAR Index, also married to a Cadwell.I have found alot of records on these folks, but it doesn't state who his parents are.She is well documented, especially through the Genealogical Society for the Cadwells.)
Their son-
+Ashbel Fox b-August 14, 1748 Hartford, Connecticut
d- December 3, 1804 Martinsburgh, NY
married- March 31, 1780 Springfield, Massachusetts
to- Jemina Osborn (Ashbel was in the Am. Rev War, also listed in the DAR Index)
Their son-
+Francis Fox b- September 1796 Hartford, Connecticut
D- January 1866 (Out west, death state hard to determine- either Michigan or Wisconsin- first owner of the North and South Fox Islands and a portion of Beaver Island in Michigan- There is a historical society on Beaver Island that has kept up with these Fox's- there is a lake, road, and a really huge rock named for this Francis Fox.)
married- 1827 Lewis Co, NY
to- Cynthia Fiske
Their son-
+Ralph Osborn Fox b- February 7, 1829 West Leydon, NY
D- October 20, 1912 Palacios, Texas
Married- April 18, 1850 Beaver Island, Michigan
to- Mary Ann Paulina Page (The Pages that were Mormon, that started the conflict in Michigan.Ralph also is in the Civil War- Wisconsin Unit)
Their son
+Captain Henry Archie Edwin FoxMy great grandfather
married- Matilda Anna Steele (Of the Steeles of New England)
their daughter-
Rose Belle Fox my grandmother
These Fox's migrated from England, to Connecticut, to New York, to Wisconsin, to Michigan, to Illinois, to Texas, to Oklahoma, and eventually back out to Virginia.I have had a conflicting story that the family moved from New York to Virginia, and started a plantation there until they decided to move to Wisconsin/Michigan.I honestly do not know.I'm just gathering the information, and very slowly doing the research.
Unfortunately, it's been a little rough, my mom's side is in about four different languages- Finnish, Swedish, Latin, and English, so I've been trying to keep it all straight.I think another language has come into play, but I"m letting someone else figure that out- Russian.
Up to Vaniah, I have it documented that these folks, indeed, are our family.I just can't seem to find anything on Vaniah's parents.I have had alot of folks tell me from the Mormon LDS site that his father is too, Sir Stephen Fox.When I ask for documentation, sources, etc, I don't hear back from them.I have yet to find a record, and of course, when I searched in England, Fox is a very common surname, and so, the needle in the haystack suddenly became pointless. Not that I've given up, it's just on hiadas for me.
This is what I have on hand, I will have to get back to you on that Charter thing. It's a really neat story. If I remember correctly, it had something about how Sir Stephen Fox was Charles' right hand man, and he took him on a "private tour" of the colonies.I don't know how much of it is true, simply because I really haven't done a proper research on the history of the colonies, and all that happened.I guess I have a jist of it, simply because of schooling.
Hope this helps, and perhaps you know of this family line- would it be the same that your association is looking for?
Sincerely,
Keittaa
