Dorothy,
You are so right. If I have info wrong and someone has the correct information, I am so glad if they correct me and show the documentation.Often I get "corrections" that are based on the old traditional tree and people act insulted that I continue to use my information based on records, rather than their information based on hearsay (old genealogy books with no sources). The book becomes the source and forget the book doesn't list a source for the knowledge the author seems to have. Not saying he/she didn't believe what they wrote but if documentation says it is wrong, it is wrong and people just can't accept that.
What is worse is that County and State "Histories" continue the mess when they reprint these old genealogies with no thought of making sure it is correct, even if the stories seem so farfetched........Then the source becomes that book also, so now you can list two or three sources that all go back to one source, who didn't have a source!
I read a story a few years ago of a school book being used in several states for grade school kids about the first Thanksgiving and the pilgrims relationship with Native Americans. The inaccuracies were glaring and SO wrong it was laughable, but this is being taught to the kids, reguardless.
You are right, we are so lazy that we can't make sure things are correct and well maybe the correct word is too arrogant, to make sure we tell the truth about our history and teach that to our children.Myths sound better and the more you repeat them the stronger they get!
Renee
