I started school in 1943 in a tiny town in Texas. It was for grades one through eleven at the time and later changed to one through twelve.I spent my first four years in the same room.Different teachers, but in the same room.
I entered the fifth grade in a new elementary school building at the rear of the old building on the site of the old girl's outhouse - an 8-holer - and then it was back to the old building.I graduated from high school in 1955 on the same stage where I received a certificate for perfect attendance in the first grade.
In elementary school, every day sarted with a song:
Good morning to yu, Good morning to you, We're all in our places With sunshiney faces, Oh, this is the way To start a new day.
That was followed by reciting the Pledge of Allegience.
Some 44 years ago, there was a consolidation of three neighboring school districts into one system called Hays Consolidated ISD.The old building is now the Buda Elementary Upper Campus. Each year in April, we have a Buda High Forever reunion in the room that still has the stage. We sing the school song "Buda High Forever" and sometims the fight song "On You Bulldogs" --- --- and we cry.
