My 2great-grandfather, John George Herrmann, is mentioned in the history books of Autauga Co Al. John George was born in Basil,Switzerland on 6-13-1790, and served in Napoleon's army in Europe before emigrating to the United States in 1818. John George became a successful planter in Autauga Al, where he died in 1876. The Autauga history books say he served in Napoleon's army all through the Russian campaign, where he was severely injured in the leg at the Battle of Leipzig, and stayed with Napoleon through tothe end at the Battle of Waterloo. It also states that a John George Herrmann was listed among Napoleon's troops, but doesn't give any further information, nor does the family have information about his service record. He spoke German, and he apparently had a master gardener's certificate from Basil. He was also an accomplished tailor.
Any suggestions about how to research his family and/or his service record would be greatly appreciated.
