Trying to find more information on husband's ancestors. His ancestor's father and father-in-law were involved in the Napoleonic War.Any help with this would be appreciated. Below is what information I have:
Born in Mommenheim, Germany, February 6, 1842, Mr. Grub is the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Elbing) Grub, native Germans. Both his grandfathers were soldiers under Napoleon I for years, having passed through many of the great campaigns that made such fame for that great French general. His maternal grandfather was an officer in the French cavalry and was with Napoleon at the burning of Moscow and on the historic retreat from that Russian city.He received a pension from the French government until his death. His paternal grandfather was a member of the French guard at the great battles of Leipzig, Dresden, Hanau, Bauzen and Lowenburg, and was intimately associated with Napoleon through many hard campaigns. His death occurred in Germany, 1870. Grandfather Grub here in America, (who used the title of "von" until WWI broke out and dropped it to keep out of jail), was from the von Grubbenhagen line that, according to a very distant relative (now decesed) in England, that traces back to Hamlettus von Grubbenhagen.
