The Fords were a roving family. In the early 1800's, Austin Ford, the grandfather of Charlie and Bob, reportedly lived for a time on the grounds of Mount Vernon, George Washtington's home near Alexandria, Virgina. Some of the stone masonry that was completed there after Washington's death was done by Ford. Later Ford lived in Fauquier County, Virginia, where his son James Thomas Ford, was born in 1820. The Fords moved to Missouri and back to Virginia several times. James Ford worked as a tenant farmer at Mount Vernon from 1881 to 1883 then returned to Missouri. He came back to Virginia in 1862 shortly after his son Bob's birth in Missouri, where things were starting to take a nasty turn in terms of guerrilla warfare. According to Ford family tradition, James rented rooms and acreage at Mount Vernon in 1862 and then eventually moved to Fauquier County, near present-day Marshall, where Bob later attended school. During their brief time at Mount Vernon the Ford Chidren are said to have sneaked to the attic where furniture and artifacts such as the Bastille key given to Washington by Lafayette and Nellie Custis's piano were stored.
The Fords parents were married in Virginia at the home of Benjamin Ball. George Washington's mothers last name was Ball.
