PIONEER WHO ‘SASSED JESSE JAMES IS DEAD
DENVER, APRIL 2,--(UP)—Mrs. Adelia E. Darrow, widow of the original “Drummer Boy of Shiloh” and the woman who talked back to Jesse James will be buried here tomorrow. She was the daughter of J. A. Dix, pioneer Iowa settler. Most of her early life was spent in a cover wagon on the plains helping the men folk blaze a new trail to the west. She married Darrow shortly after his return from the civil war. One day when Darrow was gone a band of horsemen leading a number of spare mounts approached the wagon. A dog belonging to the Darrow ran out barking. The leader of the band drew his gun and aimed at the dog. Mrs. Darrow rushed out and defied the gunman to shoot the animal. He smiled and put the revolver back in its holster, and then galloped away. Later a posse drove up and informed the woman her visitors were Jesse James and his outlaws.
