Thanks to everyone who has e-mailed me with ideas as well as Barry & Tana - you PAF folks are swell! And SMART - this program is very difficult to work.It takes several steps to do what I can do from one screen in FTM.One BIG flaw is that there is no "Back" button - so I keep flailing around helplessly, trying to get back to where I was just a moment before!
I think I have fixed the file to the best of my ability - with your help.I went back to my file and looked at the names that PAF had said had errors - sure enough, every one had some problem that PAF couldn't handle, like in FTM I can enter two names for the same individual, such as "Elizabeth Legett" and "Catherine Legett" with two different sources for the names. She is "Elizabeth/Catherine Legett" on the family page in FTM.In PAF I had to list her with one of the names and put a notation in her notes about the other one. I had the same problem with several people who had two different birth or death dates, with sources for both dates.
PAF did me a favor in several instances though because it caught people who had been duplicated in my file - one of them 4 times! By telling me that there was an "unknown relationship" between the people and their parents, I found that one person had 4 sets of parents, three of whom were just duplicates of her actual parents.
I downloaded the PAF Operating Manual from the website today, put it onto a floppy and took it to Kinkos and had it printed. At least now I can look stuff up instead of having to holler for help in the middle of the night - I hope!
