Judi, most likely what has happened is that the "file" association for GEDCOM files has changed from PAF to another program on your computer. You can determine just which program has "taken over" your .GED files by clicking on any file with that new icon. It should open in the program that is now associated with your .GED extension files.
You can edit this association by clicking on MY COMPUTER|VIEW|FOLDER OPTIONS|FILE TYPES. Then locate the program and edit it so that it doesn't open your .GED extension files. You will then have to create a new association for the .GED extension with your PAF program.
